Gateshead FC: Statement from Rachel Cabral

“Gateshead Green Party is shocked by the news about Gateshead FC. To play in the Football League, clubs are required to have a 10 year ground lease with no strings attached which the current Council owners are unable to guarantee for Gateshead FC.

My family go to Gateshead FC home and away games as do many of the members of Gateshead Greens. If I am elected I will not represent the views of the Labour led Council but will be able to challenge their decisions independently. My starting point is that Gateshead FC is the best tenant for the Stadium and a promoted Gateshead FC would be an attractive proposition for any future operators of the Stadium. We would argue for a not for profit partner, with all profits returned to the public for the benefit of leisure and sports at all levels including Gateshead FC.

A successful football team will attract more investment into Gateshead and benefit other local businesses.

If I am elected I will have so much more opportunity to challenge the Council and the English Football League on your behalf.

It’s hard to quantify how having a local team contributes to a community but we know when Gateshead played at Wembley they took thousands of fans and it gave a real buzz to the whole of the town. We need to find a way to preserve this.”
